Introducing Nuvoton's new Automotive and Industrial battery management ICs

Nuvoton's new battery management ICs

Brief introduction to Nuvoton's impressive new range of battery management ICs

Nuvoton, a leading semiconductor manufacturer, offers a range of battery monitoring ICs that can help you ensure the safe and efficient operation of a wide range of battery-powered devices. Here's a brief introduction to Nuvoton's KA84933UA, KA49517A, and KA49522A battery monitoring ICs and their applications.

KA84933UA

The KA84933UA is an AEC-Q100 certified Automotive Battery Management IC for Multi-cell Stacked Battery Systems, specifically designed for use in electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and energy storage systems (ESSs). It supports up to 20 battery cells connected in series, with an alarm function for detecting overcharging and undercharging. The IC features high-accuracy voltage and temperature monitoring, as well as cell balancing to improve battery performance and extend battery life. The chip also includes 13 CH of GPIOs which can be configured as analogue in or digital in/out. Additionally, the KA84933UA includes fault detection and protection features, such as overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, and short-circuit protection, to ensure the safety and reliability of the battery system.

KA49517A

The KA49517A is a battery monitoring IC with built in protection that is suitable for a wide range of battery-powered devices, including e-Bike, UPS, Server Backup Systems, Power Tools and ESS. The IC features a compact design, low power consumption, and high accuracy voltage and temperature monitoring. This device can support an application with up to 17 battery cells in series or a maximum 85V. It also has a built in 16-bit low speed Current Measurement ADC and 14-bit voltage ADC. It also incorporates 4 GPIOs, 2 Ch High Voltage Output GPOH and 5 Ch of analogue input measurement for thermistors.

KA49522A

The KA49522A is a more robust version of the KA49517A, which supports 22 battery cells in series or a maximum voltage of 110V so it is suitable for a similar line up of high input voltage applications such as E-Bikes and ESS.

These ICs are a new launch from Nuvoton so full data sheets are not available at the time of writing, but they do have comprehensive Product Briefs which you can access below:
